SIMMIE GENE FLANDERS
Simmie Gene Flanders, age 78, of East Palatka, died Tuesday June 1, 2010 after an extended illness. He was a native of Glennville, Georgia and lived in East Palatka for the past 60 years. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and retired after 30 years as maintenance superintendent in tissue converting at Georgia Pacific. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War having received a Purple Heart and Silver Star. He was a member of Pineland Masonic Lodge # 86 F&AM and served as Worshipful Master in 1999. He was a member of the Putnam County Shrine Club and Morocco Temple Shrine in Jacksonville where he was honored as Shriner of the Year in 1998. He was an honorary member of Roy Road Hunting Club and loved to hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Flanders, his parents, Lilla & Joseph Flanders, a son, Larry Michael Flanders, sister, Kay Flanders Floyd and a brother, William R. “Bill” Flanders. He is survived by 2 sons, Gary G. Flanders of Palatka and George Louis Flanders & wife, Denise of San Mateo; 2 sisters, Linda McDavid & husband, Tom of Gainesville and Judy Polk of Gulfport, Mississippi; brother, Joe Flanders, II & wife, Carolyn of East Palatka; sisters-in-law, Jewel Broer of East Palatka and Pauline Faircloth of Valdosta; 4 grandchildren, Sammy Flanders and Will Flanders, both of San Mateo, Lindsay Branch & husband, Matt of Florahome and Betsey Flanders of Palatka; 5 great-grandchildren, Haylee Branch, Brian Branch, Nicholas Branch, Matalin Branch and Jayden Flanders; his former daughter-in-law, Delores Flanders of Palatka along with many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday June 5th at the Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka with Rev. Hardy B. Sandlin, III officiating and Pineland Lodge # 86 F&AM conducting Masonic rites. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with the U.S. Army conducting full military honors. Friends may call Friday from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka. In celebration of his life a memorial video will be shown.
