JAMES LAWTON COWARD 

James Lawton Coward, 80, passed away at Putnam Community Medical Center on January 9, 2010. 

James was born May 15, 1929 to James Lester and Harriett (Gamradt) Coward at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC.  He graduated from Crescent City High School in 1947 and entered the naval reserves.  In 1949 he married the love of his life, Barbara Kent Smith in Micanopy, Florida. 

Through the years he was an owner and operator of several businesses in Putnam County, which included building contracting, a grocery store and a water conditioning business.  In earlier years he was a member of the Lion’s Club.  He last resided in Satsuma.  He was known to his friends as Jimmy and his grandchildren as Pop. 

James is preceded in death by his parents, James and Harriett, and a brother, Franklin.

 He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara, and five sisters, Marie Williams, Barbara Jean (Gene) Byrd, Marlene (Fred) Murdough, and Laurette “Peanut” Adams all of Crescent City; and Lorraine (Marshall) McLeod of Pensacola; sister-in-law, Barbara Coward.  He is also survived by his four children Jane (Jack) Peebles of Dunellon, Gary (Esme) Coward of Crescent City, Roberta (Del) Carmichael of Homosassa Springs, and Michelle (Terry) Fitzgerald of Watkinsville, GA; eight grandchildren:Travis (Joy) Peebles of Dunnellon, Gunnery Sergeant Joseph (Aimee) Carmichael of Cherry Point, NC, Lane Peebles, Christina (Dirk) van Langenberg of Val Verde, CA, Richard Fitzgerald, Watkinsville, GA, 1LT Jonathan (Elizabeth) Coward of Fort Riley, KS, Wesley Fitzgerald, and Daniel Fitzgerald, both of Watkinsville, GA; and six great grandchildren: Peyton and Emily Carmichael, Shelby and Jacob Peebles, Zachary van Langenberg, and Isaac Coward along with many nieces and nephews. 

A celebration of life is being planned on what would be Jimmy and Barbara’s 61st wedding anniversary, April 17th.  Details will be announced closer to that time.
