KENNETH THOMPSON

Ken Thompson, age 66 passed away Sunday, September 6, 2009 at Christus Santa Rosa Medical Center in San Antonio, TX.  Ken Thompson was born to William and Pauline Thompson in Palatka Florida on October 6, 1942. He became a football star winning the Hancock trophy for all round excellence in athletics for the year 1959-60.  He played college football for the Florida State Seminoles on scholarship.  He was a bass player, songwriter and singer in several bands in Florida and Nashville.  After two years at Florida State he decided to attend Peabody College in Nashville where he majored in art.  After that point art became the major focus of his life.  He went to New York after graduation and worked as an illustrator and designer at Reader’s Digest.  He later returned to Nashville to accept a position as creative designer of Nashville Magazine.  In Atlanta he worked at Graphics Group before striking out on his own. Ken was a prolific artist and designer whose work covered a wide range of disciplines.  Along with continuous exploration of images in his personal art, he was a graphic designer, furniture designer, and new product designer.  His designs and furniture have been selected to appear in several national design books, including the prestigious ‘Graphis’ Annuals.  Feature articles concerning his graphic design have been published in ‘Print’ Magazine (USA) and Novum Gerbrauchsgraphik (Germany).  In Atlanta Ken designed the ‘Inman Park Butterfly’ and on the national scale he designed the 1977 USA Inaugural Theme Float for the Inaugural Parade of President Jimmy Carter. He redesigned and rebuilt three historic houses transforming them into studios and art-space.  He thought, he created, he built, he challenged, and he inspired.  We have lost a great one.

Ken is survived by 2 sons, Ken Thompson, II and wife, A.J. Thompson of San Antonio, TX, Bryan Thompson of Austell GA and their mother, June Teuton Thompson, a brother, Donnie Thompson and wife, Betty of Palatka a sister, Pat Ray and husband, Claude of St. Augustine, nieces and nephews, Darenda Thompson, Deanna French and husband, Bill, Vicki Bartlam and husband, David, Rick Shiver and wife, Ginny, Carol Whitham and husband, Brenden, Gary Bonnelle and wife, Linda, Doneen Boyd, Angela Thurlow and husband, Howard, Joey Muffoletto and wife, Christina, Dana Gerstle and wife, Mark, Susan Snedden, Stacey Hastey and husband, Eric, Trey Pope and close friend, June Corley.
