RUBY W. MOTES 

Ruby Wanell Motes, age 86 of Palatka, passed away, Sunday, March 22, 2009 at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness.  She was a native of Waycross, GA and resided in Putnam County since 1941 coming from St. Augustine.  She along with her husband, Delman had owned and operated Motes Hardware Store in downtown Palatka for 32 years.  She had also previously worked for J.C. Penney.  Mrs. Motes was a member of Peniel Baptist Church where she was active with the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) and also taught Sunday School for 30 years.  She was a very devoted wife, mother and daughter.  As her hobbies, she enjoyed gardening and flowers and was a seamstress. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Amos and Ella Willis and a daughter, Sylvia J. Elliott.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Delman Motes of Palatka, a daughter, Pam Bass and husband, John of Palatka, a brother, Vernon McQuaig of St. Augustine, 5 grandchildren, Robert Elliott and wife, Renee’, of Kennesaw, GA, Michelle McStay and husband, Aubrey of Dallas, GA, Kimberly Rivers and husband, Jimmy of Palatka, Jay Bass and wife, Milisa, of Old Town and Joshua  Bass of Palatka, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. 

Services will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Peniel Baptist Church with Brother Benny Reynolds officiating.  Burial will follow in Peniel Cemetery.  Visitation will be Wednesday, March 25th from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.
